Kolinjivadi - A Place of Tradition

Kolinjivadi - One of the ancient Brahmin establishments in Tamilnadu. It is a beautiful agraharam situtated by the banks of the river Amaravathi (Aan Porunai in Tamil). Here, the speciality of Amaravathi is, she is flowing as Uttaravahini (towards north).

This village is situated in the Kongu Region of Tamilnadu and the biggest brahmin establishment among the K-Villages(Kolinjivadi, Kaniyur, Kadathur, Kozhumam, Komaralingam, Kannadiputhur, Karathozhuvu) situated by the bank of Amaravathi.

The nearest town is Dharapuram(Viratapuram of Mahabharatham Period) of Tiruppur District. River Amaravathi seperates Dharapuram and Kolinjivadi.

In ancient days, we have dense mango gardens by the sides of amaravathi and hence she got the name derived from the sanskrit word aambra(mango) vathi.

There is a temple dedicated to Lord Kameshwaran and Kamakshi by the banks of the river. Facing south, a beautiful Dakshinamoorthi is there within the temple premises. Scholars claim that the god is of type Medha Dakshinamoorthi.

Kolinjivadi is a well planned and well formed village having a beautiful Krishna temple to its centre as a nucleus. The presiding deity is Rukmani Sathyabama samedha Venugopala Krishnan. The moolavar Krishna is standing in a posture of playing flute and being accompanied by Rukmani and Sathyabama having encircled with a herd of cows.

At this temple, every year during April, we have a grand celebration of Sri Rama Navami Utsavam for ten days followed by Seetha Kalyanam and Anjaneya Utsavam. This celebration is being practiced for more than 85 years.

Great Bhagavathas and Vaidheegas will take part of the celebration and present their pravachanams time to time. Kuthcheri's of eminent classical musicians were also be a part of the Utsavam.

To the east of the agraharam, we can see lush green paddy fields. By the other end of the fields there is a huge temple of Pandya period. The presiding deities are Meenakshi and Sokkanathar. Nearby villages Meenakshipuram and Sokkanathapalayam were named after the deities of this temple. There is a canal catering the paddy fields flows, to the east of the temple.

The whole agraharam of kolinjivadi lies in between the amaravathi river to the west and the Meenakshi Sokkanathar temple to the east.

To the extreme north of the village there exists Thillapuri Amman Temple. This is the place where Pandavas hide their belongings during their Ajnana Vasam.

    2. exact location of our house(the old one actually)!!! btw Ramasubramania iyer(my great grandfather) was a Mudradikari of Sringeri mutt for kolinjivadi and so was his father(parasurama iyer). He was a good astrologer too. Parasurama Iyer had the opportunity to do pada puja for three consecutive sringeri acharyas. That was way back to the beginning of the previous century :) Sriram iyer was his father. that should be somewhere in the 1870's. lol.

  4. From the words of Mahabharatham, the possibilities of Dharapuram being Matsya Desam is very clear. Pandavas spent their ajnana vasam in this region. During the period of Mahabharatham, Dharapuram (Viratapuram) was under Pandyas.

Matsya Desam is another name for Pandya Desam,as they have fish(Matsya) as their symbol of bravery.

In the Kottai temple, the presiding deity is Uththara Veera ragava Permual. The son and daughter of Virata King are named after the deity as UththaraKumaran and Uththira respectively.

Apart from that, we have lot of evidences to show Viratadesam is nowhere but the present day Dharapuram.

This is reflected in the Mahabharata references in the Kongunadu where Bhisma and the Kauravas came for a cattle raid which is in the pattern called Vetchi (Tam:வெட்சி) in Sangam literature, where cattle, the primary wealth of the people is taken as stake to initiate a war. Kongumandalasatakam says that the cattle raid was sucessfully repelled by Arjuna (Bruhannala) with Uttarakumaran, the son of the King Viratarayan of Ladapuram (modern Dharapuram) at a skirmish at the banks of the Kanchi (Noyil) (dates: 3100 B.C, Mahabharata). This place was named Tiruppur or the place where the cattle were rerouted back to Ladapuram. These shifting farmer-cattleherd villages were called pattis after the cow pens.

Kongu is called Matsyadesam and the capital is Ladapuram (Viratapuram or modern Dharapuram)
      1)Virataraya
The father of Mahabharatam's Uttarakumaran and Uttarakumari who are named after Uttara Veeranarayana Perumal, the local Tirumal). They are instrumental in the Mahabharata offering refuge to the pandavas in thier court during their Agnyathavasam period and helping them to regroup and plan stratagies. He marries daughter Uttarakumari to Abhimanyu, son of Arjuna. Kichakan of Keechakanur (Keeranur) is killed by Bhima.

Nice to see blog about K villages and Dharapuram.
I am from Kadathur village. I am grand son of Sri Viswanatha Sastry and son of Sri Ramamoorthi.
    I am settled in Hyderabad.
Anyone connected with my father/ grand father can share their memories. It seems we had more than 100 acres of land but my father had to sell that due to some problems. I do not remember anything about that so I would like to know more about it.

    2. Yes I have visited our Agraharam twice, once in the year 2006 and the next in 2008 after my marriage. We have stayed at Mr.Ganesa Iyer's house who passed away 3 or 4 years back after donating his house to Kanchi Mutt since they were childless couple. One of our ancestral relations are K R Anantharaman whose Dad K V Ramasamy was my Great Grandfather C N Ramasamy's Cousin. Mr. Anantha Raman's nephew Shiv Shankar is my friend over here at Chennai. I visited his house at Kolinjivadi after my marriage. Since my great grand mother was from Kumaralingam, a native village we were able to trace roots to some extent.

This village has great links with Appaya Dikshitar and his descendants all over Tanjore and Tirunelveli. Please post more on the Amman Temple. Incidentally in one post I read about Angalamman in Nerur ( This Goddess is actually Pachaiamman and is seen alone). In fact all the clan of Appaya Dikshitar point out a singular Amman.

    1. From madurai you need to take Coimbatore bus to reach dharapuram. From Dharapuram, kolinjivadi is just 3 km away towards the east by the banks of River Amaravathi.

To the north of Kolinjivadi a road next to the old Amaravathi bridge will take you to the Smasaanam(cremation area). Just a 10 minutes travel in a motor vehicle on that road, will take you to Thillapuri Amman temple.

Please come to kolinjivadi and just give me a call. I can accompany you , if possible, if not definitely i can assist you.

      Thanks

  26. OK, here comes another descendant of Kolinjiwadi ancestors, I am writing from Germany. My great-grandmother was Meenakshi (c. 1862-1928, was she named after the village temple?, she later lived in Coimbatore married to Annaswamy Iyer of Vellalore).

Meenakshi is said to have been from a very affluent Kolinjiwadi family, they held large land property. There were 5 sisters (Ponnammal, Meenakshi, Subbalakshmi, Janaki, Seshi). Their father was Suppanna (or Subramania?) Iyer of Kadathur, mother was Sankari Ammal of Kolinjiwadi.

Sankari Ammal had the honour of descending from Narayana Dikshitar from Karatholuvu who himself had holy-man Appaya Dikshitar of the 16th century as an ancestor.

So, many K-Villages involved in this family tree.

My wish is this: Would it possible to post some photographs from Kolinjiwadi anywhere on the net? Can anything of the past still be seen or felt in Kolinjivadi? Temple, agraharam, landscape? Would be nice to see it in pictures. In my case I would like to include them in a family album.

I am planning to come to K. myself. Will take pictures and would like to say hello to Ambasoft then.

    1. Hello,
I am very happy to hear from you about your ancestral origin with Kolinjivadi.

Yes, we have Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple at the eastern frontier of our village. You great-grand mother might have named after the presiding deity.

Regarding photographs, please go through the other posts of this blog, you might come across some thing. If you would like to have some more, i will get it for you in a while.

The landscape, temples and the topography of the agraharam remains unchanged still now. But households were left the place and occupied by various communities

On your ancestor details, i will try to gather information from my father..
It is almost 90 years since your great-grand mother period.
By the meanwhile, do you still have any one living here or some one lived here in recent times ? if so, please share the details.

You are always welcome to Kolinjivadi, i am here to help you in whatever way you wish.

    2. Thanks, Ambasoft. Very tempted to come and see the interesting remains of the agraharam. I believe these places were supposed to always have streets in a strict north-south order. This seems to be the case here. Are there traces of other Agraharams in the surrounding villages, the K-villages?
Thanks for uploading those pictures that I found in the blog archive. Very nice, inspiring to go and visit. One day please post photos from the opposite side of the river, looking towards K. And pictures of the village temples (full building to get a feel of the architecture).
Will definitely announce in time my visit. Straight from Hamburg to Kolinjiwadi ...

    3. Nice. Streets were spread across all the directions. Whereas the main backbone lane runs north-south. other small lanes branch out laterally.

Among the K-Village Agraharams, Kolinjivadi is the biggest... Not sure about the structure of other agraharams...

Yes, i will try to shoot a photo from the other side of Amaravathi, focusing our Agraharam later. I will post the temple photos very soon.

    Namaskaram

    This is Vijayalakshmi from Bangalore.

We recently came to know that our forefathers belonged to Kolinjivadi & Venugopala Swami is our kuladaivam.

We have the following information about our great grandparents.

His name was Venkatashesha Iyengar & was a kanakku pillai there. His wife was Tirumalai Ammal. They had 3 children- 2 sons & 1 daughter. The elder son’s name was Ananthakrishna Iyengar & the younger Son was Ramamurthi iyengar. Venkatasheshan died when his 2nd son was 1 & half years old. After that, Tirumalai Ammal moved to CBE with her children. We are told that his house was somewhere near the post office.

It would be of great help if you could kindly confirm the actuality of the above information if possible.

Please come to our house once you visit kolinjivadi, next time.

So, bringing everything under a roof and get things going is the toughest task regarding Sri rama navami celebrations.

Thanks for your response. Our Gotham is Bharathwajam. After my grandfather my father’s brother Adinarayanan V was in Dharapuram till 1982 as Postmaster. My grandfather’s father name is Adinarayanan and his father’s name is Krishna Iyer. My father used tell me that we belong to k village. My feeling is our root might be from komaralingam as well. I want to find my family deity (lady) and so far I was under impression we have only Baladhandaythapani of Palani as our family deity. My doubt is thillapri Amman near kolinjawadi as our lady family deity. I do not know how to confirm this.

    Thanks again for your response.
    Regards

    1. Dear Adinarayanan,
I've inquired the details you provided with my father, he knows Sri.Adinarayanan Postmaster very well. And also one of your forefathers Sri. Krishnaswamy iyer was a teacher to my father in Board High School, Dharapuram.

My father told that, all your relatives known to him were relocated from Kolinjivadi... so, he don't have any clues regarding your Kula Deivam.... There are two known female Kula Deivams are common among the vadama people of Kolinjivadi.... a) thillapuri amman (near amaravathi), b) Kadhambari amman (near kaniyur)... Better you can consult with some authentic joshiyar to confirm the Kula deivam.

      thanks

My paternal grandmother Saraswathy is the daughter of N. Subburatanam Iyer (Advocate). She married Padmanabhaswami Iyer from Gobichettipalayam. My periappa Shri S P Venkatesan practices law in K’vadi. All my uncles and my father studied in Board High Sxhool. My cousins and I have visited K’vadi a numerous times and my last visit was in 2007. Wonderful memories. I hope the agraharam and the temples are preserved for the heritage and that they don’t fall into the hands of people that would destroy them.

Hru glad to know from mrs chandra this year sriramanavami went on well but with meagre participation.so many Kvadi people came in the blog but sadly none responded for the function or given their donations.only two my self n another gave rs3000 each
Total expenses around Rs 50000/-.so many Kvadi people enquired about the function right from 2012 but of no use to revive our village function.our plan to do kumbabisekam for Sri chokkamathar temple n Krishnan kovil received a setback after seeing the response.u see non brahmins who left their village come n celebrate their village festival for their deity without fail even from usa Singapore etc.but see our people. Sri kanchi mahaperiyava has advised that we must preserve our heritage for our generation to prosper.let us pray for good times n appeal to all kvadians to do their best to keep our village traditions alive.

Is there anybody related to our family living in the village or near by towns as my grand father left the village at the age of 9years after the death of his father and as he was the only son there is nobody to refer.

  56. Very interesting blog on the K-villages and so encouraging! I visited Karathozuvu a couple weeks ago, the ancestral place on my maternal side after 59 years. The agraharam is less picturesque these days. The home of my grandmother Balambal (1897-1993) still exists and is well maintained but no longer in the family. We worshipped at the Alagunachi Amman temple which is still very active. The Isvaran and Nataraja temples appear to be less active. My grandmother was the daughter of Pranatharthihara Dikshitar making her a direct descendant of Appayya Dikshitar in the 11th generation. She lived long and regaled me with many stories of the K-villages and connections. Pranatharthihara Dikshitar was a Sanskrit scholar and a major landowner in his times. He was close to the Sringeri Math and is said to have offered biksha to the 33rd and 34 th acharyas on their way to Kalady when they would camp in the K-villages. His wife Ananthalakshmi and mother Subbulakshmi hailed from landed families of Kadathur. My grandmother’s brothers Thyagaraja Dikshitar and Nataraja Dikshitar lived in Karathozuvu and were active in village circles. A green marakata (jade) lingam gifted by Appayya Dikshitar himself to an ancestor was in continuous worship for the 500 odd years since that great man’s demise. Thyagaraja Dikshitar was married to Janaki grand daughter of Kozhumam Periaswamy Iyer who was known to be one of the biggest landowners in the Madras Presidency. My grandmother narrated many stories about the Kozhumam family some of which I remember. The Kozhumam estate was dissolved I think in 1980s. There were many Dikshitar families descended from Appayya Dikshitar in the Karathozuvu agraharam in those days. A holy person, Sivarudrabalayogi of Dehra Dun is a descendant of one of these families whom I met some years ago in the USA. Balambal was married to A.S Ramanatha Aiyar (1890-1941) who was Travancore’s Superintendent of Archaeology in the 1920s. He linked Karatholuvu and Kolinjivadi from some inscriptions I think to Appayya Dikshitar’s early descendants and possibly the Vijayanagar empire. You may have more data. Keep up this good work of recollections and nostalgia Ambarish!!

Nice to hear. Can you kindly find out the name of Kozhumam Periaswamy Aiyar's only son? he died in a tragic accident maybe 100 years ago at a teppotsavam ceremony at Kozhumam temple. I have forgotten the name. I think he had studied law and was quite young. Also my grandmother would tell me how some gypsy(??) showed up at the estate house and said there was buried treasure. Cant remember much any more! Have you heard? Do you have any photoes of Kozhumam to share? Old Karatholuvu ? The current agraharam there looks to be so different and mostly newcomers since that old lifestyle is gone.Did you know my Periappa at Udumalpet, Dr. SMV Krishnan of Netaji Medical Hall? He passed away 1993. He was the first MBBS doctor in that area and was the doctor for the Kozhumam estate and many other folks in Karatholuvu, etc.

He was a Canara bank employee and was in Madathukulam branch but resided mainly in k villages viz Kaniyur, Kadathur and karathozhuvu all in Agraharam. I heard him speaking about kolinjivadi many a time. he passed away 20 years back but we carry a lot of memories surrounding that villages. His name is Rajamani Iyer and we were in that place somewhere durin 1974 to 1979. We lived in Rao bhagahur house in Kaniyur and in karathozhuvu near Natarajan temple. Just curios to know more about him during that age as I was just 6 years old then. In Keeranur also we lived in chitralaya house. Any details on his friends that time who can share some memories about our father? He was 1933 born and was 45 years when there.

Ameena Subramaniya Iyer (Wife : Saradhambal) who lived in between Maniappa and Chandrappa house.

*Children's of Ameena Subramaniya Iyer and Saradhambal*

    1) Meena
    2) Nagalakshmi alias Nagu
    3) Savithri
    4) Jayalakshmi alias Jayam

My grandmother *Nagalakshmi* used to say that her father (Ameena Subramaniya Iyer) and mother (Saradhambal) familly is bigger one. She used to say many names but don't know where those people's are living now. People's scattered to different different places. After they gets scattered, they lost the contacts because earlier the way of contact will be through post. Now a days, we have lot more technology which helps us to connect easily.

If any of my great grandfather (Ameena Subramaniya Iyer) and great grandmother (Saradhambal) side relative come across this post, drop me a mail to govindongopalan@gmail.com

    *Note :*

    1. I still remembers Tharagram Silk Jaana paati (Nagalakshmi's cousin) but don't have their family contacts.

    2. Likewise, I still remembers Sadhasivam (Nagalakshmi's cousin), but don't have their contact.

I hope this blog will help Kolinjivadi people's to reunite all. And let me know if anyone nativity is of Singanallur/Kuruchi, Coimbatore.

I would like to thank Ambarish anna (Ambasoft) for taking this initiative.
